A Common Enemy
Under Trump, America lost the war on the coronavirus. Under Biden, we finally have a chance to defeat it.
As President Biden noted in his inauguration address, America now has more fatalities due to COVID-19 than died in combat in World War II. In less than a year, Trump’s recklessness, corruption and total stupidity caused more Americans to die than were lost in America’s deadliest foreign war.
Despite claiming the mantle of a “Wartime President,” Trump waved the white flag early, allowing the virus to spread rapidly, even to the least populated (and easiest to protect) areas of the country. Along the way, Republican Governors and MAGA morons were eager to embrace Trump’s anti-science “herd mentality” stupidity.
Now Biden inherits a country that not only leads the world in death, but is far behind many other developed nations whose economies have already rebounded and where life has gotten back to normal or something close to it.
After four years of Trump destruction, the challenges America faces are enormous. But none can be tackled until the virus is under control and the economy is back on solid ground.
In one day, Biden has already shown more empathy for America’s losses than Trump showed in an entire year. And he has a plan to help all Americans — in Red States and Blue — win the war against Covid.
Biden’s plan to tackle the virus is not brain surgery. It’s simple enough for even a QAnon believer to understand.
As the sun rose on Biden’s first full day in office, our new President had issued a national mask mandate covering federal property, challenged Americans to “mask up” for the next 100 days, rejoined the World Health Organization, and more.
Dr. Fauci was already addressing the W.H.O. Executive Board Meeting:
“It is an honor for me to be here, representing the United States of America, on behalf of the newly inaugurated Biden-Harris administration, and as the Chief Medical Adviser to President Biden.”
I also am here to represent the scientists, public health officials and frontline healthcare workers, and community health workers who have worked so heroically this past year to fight COVID-19, developing medical countermeasures at truly phenomenal speed, adapting policy responses as we learn more about the virus, and courageously treating the millions of people who have been stricken by this historic scourge.
Biden also wants to vaccinate 100 million Americans in his first 100 Days. It’s an ambitious goal, made more difficult by the fact he inherited a “non-existent vaccination” plan from his pathetic predecessor.
Biden will use the Defense Production Act to get things moving. In addition to “shots in arms,” he’s also promising to inject facts, data and hard truths into the system. Other countries have already shown what’s possible when a nation accepts science and pulls together. But unless Republicans and the right-wing media machine get on board, the idiocy will continue and the death toll will mount. Already, thanks to Orange Mussolini, the US is expected to surpass 500,000 COVID-19 deaths before the end of February.
Biden’s plea for unity faces its first test in the war against COVID-19. If we can’t unite to fight the virus, America will prove itself too stupid to save.
