Beyond Malarkey.

It's official. Iowa Senator Joni Ernst confirms the GOP is more corrupt than Ukraine.

We’re less than a week from the Iowa Caucuses and Trump and his defense team aren’t the only ones obsessing with stopping Joe Biden.

Republicans, led first by Ted Cruz and now by Pat Toomey, have begun pushing the idea of a “one-for-one” witness deal that would trade legitimate—and necessary—impeachment testimony from former National Security Adviser turned book author John Bolton for the chance to cross examine Joe Biden’s son Hunter who, most everyone agrees, may have milked his family connections for cash at a sub-Trump level but broke no actual laws.

While Republicans were attempting to float this “one for one” deal as a serious idea to the nation, Democrats including Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy quickly pushed back at the ploy as not just an obvious distraction from Trump’s actual Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress, but also as a way to help Trump succeed in achieving a central aim of the very crime he was being impeached for.

Then, even as Republicans were attempting to make a semi-serious request to hear Hunter Biden’s testimony, Iowa Senator Joni Ernst stepped up to a microphone and said the quiet part out loud. She told the world that, in effect, if Ukraine wasn’t willing to do Trump’s dirty work even while being blackmailed to the tune of $391 million in delayed military aid, the Republican Party would do that same dirty work for free.

As Iowa Starting Line described it:

Pointing with both her hands, she moved back toward the microphones to make the point she found so funny.

“Okay, Iowa caucuses, folks, Iowa caucuses, are this next Monday evening. And I’m really interested to see how this discussion today informs and influences the Iowa caucus voters,” Ernst said, her voice dropping to a sarcastic tone. “Those Democratic caucus-goers. Will they be supporting Vice President Biden at this point? Not so certain about that.”

As former Democratic Senator from Missouri Claire McCaskill noted on Twitter: “I think Joni just gave up the game.”

Hopefully, the Democrats will indeed hold firm against the GOP’s latest corrupt and ridiculous scheme. Because as Senator Chris Murphy told Ari Melber on MSNBC last night: “We can’t engage in that kind of exercise. That’s exactly what this whole thing is about.”
