There was more great news about the economy Friday.
943,000 jobs were added in July and, as Reuters reports:
U.S. employers… continued to raise wages, giving the economy a powerful boost as it started the second half of what many economists believe will be the best year for growth in almost four decades.
After 4 disastrous years of Trump corruption and incompetence that cost the U.S. economy 3 million jobs, this should be a time of bipartisan celebration and optimism. Unemployment, after all, which was 8.8% when Trump left office is already down to 5.4%.
But instead of celebrating the return of American greatness, Republicans who had criticized Biden’s American Rescue Plan as “reckless” and seized upon “disappointing” numbers in prior months, fell silent Friday.
The “Pro-Death” GOP Simply Hates Goods News
When Biden took office, America was in the depths of the worst pandemic in more than 100 years. Trump’s incompetence had caused hundred of thousands of needless deaths and the worst economic crash since the Great Depression.
But Biden had assured us we could defeat the virus and “Build Back Better.” And more than 81 million voters gave him a powerful mandate to go to war against our common enemy.
By March, more than 2 million Americans were getting vaccinated every day and it was clear that, as with Obama in 2009, a new Democratic President was acting quickly to restore America to growth amid a global crisis.
Science was winning. The economy was growing. But in the name of “re-opening the economy” faster, Republican Governors, most notably Greg Abbott in Texas and Ron DeSantis in Florida, went to war on science. They banned local mask mandates and encouraged anti-vaxxers. They made sure the virus kept circulating. And when new, more contagious variants such as Delta appeared, the stage was set for cases and hospitalizations to explode again.
Grow the Economy or Die for Trump?
Governors like DeSantis and Abbott are still doubling down on stupidity and trying to blame undocumented immigrants for the surge in new cases.
But it’s not so easy to blame immigrants for the spread of disease in places like South Dakota, where cases are already up 90% in the past 14 days, even before 500,000 bikers descended on the small town of Sturgis this weekend, for an event with no mask or vaccination requirements.
There are however some signs of progress as some Republicans attempt to slow the “MAGA Plague.” For example, the GOP Governor of Arkansas, Asa Hutchinson, admitted this week that he had been an idiot to sign a law in April banning mask mandates. On Friday, a judge temporarily blocked the law, even as the Arkansas GOP refused to change it.
In some of the worst hit states, many of the vaccine hesitant are at last deciding to take the vaccine.
And while many religious anti-vaxxers continue to hope the “Blood of Jesus” will protect them or say that COVID-19 infecting themselves or their children is “God’s Will,” in Alabama, many churches are reinstating masking and safety measures amid the surge.
After 4 years of conservative Christians telling us Trump was sent by God, perhaps it’s time for those same people to ask themselves who, if not God, sent them Joe Biden and the vaccine.
